A new lighting project along a two-mile stretch of the canal towpath is underway this month, part of a broader push to make the popular walking and cycling corridor usable later into the evening.
The solar-powered fixtures, installed roughly every 80 feet, are designed to extend usability into the cooler evening hours that many Valley residents prefer during the hottest months of the year.
“People already use the towpath as a commuting shortcut,” said parks department project lead Dana Ferris. “We just want it to feel safe once the sun goes down.” The project is expected to wrap by early July.
