Cardinals rookies Beck, Love nursing injuries ahead of preseason

Arizona Cardinals rookie quarterback Carson Beck remains day to day with rib discomfort and has not resumed throwing in practice, coach Mike LaFleur said Sunday.

First-round running back Jeremiyah Love is also sidelined with an ankle injury, with ESPN reporting Sunday that Love has a high ankle sprain. The injuries cast uncertainty over Arizona’s third preseason game, set for Saturday against the Dallas Cowboys.

Beck, who sat out last Thursday’s preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders, has not practiced fully since being sacked late in the second quarter of the Hall of Fame game against the Carolina Panthers. He continued playing nine snaps after the hit.

“He’s day to day. Full transparency, the discomfort is still kind of there. We want to let him heal a little bit.”

LaFleur stressed the injury is not expected to be a long-term concern. Beck practiced last week before reporting the lingering rib discomfort.

Love, selected in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, was already ruled out for the week. When asked Sunday whether Love had been diagnosed with a high ankle sprain, LaFleur declined to elaborate.

“It’s an ankle,” LaFleur said. “We’ll keep it at that.”

LaFleur had said Saturday the team planned to evaluate Love on a weekly basis and was not projecting as far as the regular-season opener regarding his availability.

The Cardinals enter their preseason finale against Dallas with a quarterback room that has performed well despite the injuries. The group of Jacoby Brissett, Gardner Minshew, Beck and Kedon Slovis combined to go 50-for-59 with 514 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions through two preseason games.

Minshew has handled primary backup duties behind Brissett, going 14-of-16 for 101 yards and two touchdowns in the win over the Raiders on Thursday. Brissett is the established starter heading into the regular season.

Meanwhile, veteran running back James Conner has practiced in limited capacity but has yet to participate in 11-on-11 work since training camp began. LaFleur said Sunday the team is prioritizing Conner’s comfort level over a quick return.

“It’s not return to play, it’s return to performance,” LaFleur said. “Anyone can get back out there. But if they don’t feel like they can perform at the level they are capable, why put them out there.”

The Cowboys game Saturday will be Arizona’s only home preseason game at State Farm Stadium.
