Phoenix Union High School District announced this week that its free after-school tutoring program will expand to all nine of its campuses this fall, after a two-year pilot at two schools showed measurable gains in math and reading scores.
The program pairs students with trained peer tutors and volunteer educators for two sessions a week, with priority given to students who are behind grade level in core subjects.
“The pilot data made this an easy call,” said district academic officer Elena Ruiz. The district is currently recruiting additional volunteer tutors ahead of the fall rollout.
